Currently drivers who get caught behind the wheel of a vehicle using a mobile phone are subject to three points on their licence and a £100 fine.

The transport secretary has suggested that the penalty should be increased after Met Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe called for offenders to get six points on their licence.

Using mobile phones behind the wheel has been illegal since December 2003. If the increase is to go ahead drivers would receive six points and a £1000 fine, meaning you could be banned from driving if you get caught twice in 3 years.

Figures released by the Department for Transport show that in 2012 there were 17 fatal accidents involving mobile phones and a further 67 “serious accidents”.

We think this can only improve road safety and reduce accidents.
